UPDATED! 11 April 2023 - H2O and USB

This post originally appeared on 19 July 2011
  1. Vitamin Water is offering USB ports to charge mobile devices in bus shelters in various US cities.
  2. This is in support of their "ad positioning" as an alternative energy source.
  3. There is supposed to be nothing but electrical power being supplied by these ports.

While the pseudo-altruism of free electricity is somewhat appealing, and perhaps borderline clever as well, it is quite apparent that there is more here than meets the eye. It would be nearly incredible if for every USB session initiated by electron-hungry consumers, there weren't some kind of Trojan, Worm, or Virus being initiated and/or installed.
As we've known for most of recorded history, tanstaafl - There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch - and there ain't no such thing as a free charge either.

Just who is behind the applications being installed, and to whom will data be delivered? We'll have updates here as soon as more data becomes available.

--- UPDATE ---

It appears that our top-notch federal are finally catching up with us here at this site.

This link will take you to a legacy media site's coverage of this new discovery.

  1. This is not the same threat we identified here a dozen years ago.
  2. This does show that we've been out in front of the pack, identifying threats to your security.
  3. This also raises the question, "Has the FBI finished slurping your data (or injecting malware), and now they want to make sure no one else does it to you?" If not, why this warning?

As always, we'll look for further developments in this story, and updates will be posted here as soon as we have more information.

Digging For Hoffa? Not Likely!

UPDATED!
We're still waiting for confirmation that what was found was not extraterrestrial, but what we do know is that Michigan State University anthropologists found no traces of human DNA or bone fragments in soil samples taken from a driveway in a suburban Detroit backyard.
  1. Police in the Detroit, Michigan area are digging up "remains" under a residential driveway based on the claim that Jimmy Hoffa was buried there in 1975.
  2. Apparently someone just came forward to say he remembered seeing a body being buried there then and a driveway was poured on top of the grave.
  3. Many other sites have been excavated in recent years for just the same purported reason.
How reasonable is it to believe that someone has suddenly remembered something as huge as seeing a body being buried in a residential area -  over 35 years later?
Hoffa's body has been reported in at least as many places as the live Elvis has been sighted.

When will the authorities release the results of the tests done on the soil samples?
Why don't they explicitly rule out the possibility that they didn't merely not find Hoffa, but that they did find something else?
When will they come clean about the possibility that it was actually non-human remains that they have found - and not merely animals, but rather extra-terrestrials?

Our rulers have no faith in the ability of the populace to handle the thought that we are not alone in this universe, and they do everything in their power to keep us in the dark.

We'll continue to monitor this situation, and report back when we have more information.

NASA, Mars, and Nazca Lines

  1. NASA has released purported images of the tire tracks of the Curiosity Rover on Mars.
  2. These pattern created by these lines would only be visible from space.
  3. NASA is claiming that the lines contain embedded Morse Code, reading JPL.
The images posted by NASA look remarkably like the Nazca lines found in South America, but NASA makes no comment acknowledging this obvious connection. It is difficult to believe that even they have not noted the similarity in the lines, as well as in the names! (NASA : Nazca)

By claiming to have embedded additional information in the lines, NASA raises the question as to whether similar information might be embedded in the Nazca lines - yet they clearly have no intention of investigating that question (or if they do, it would appear that they would intend to keep the results of that investigation to themselves).

When will NASA - a part of the US federal government, and thus purportedly accountable to the people - release this important information to the public?
Why do they insist on keeping this potentially Earth-shaking revelation from the general populace?
When will they release data regarding the levels of radioactivity of the Nazca lines?

We'll report back here as more information becomes available.

Oh, that was choice!

First lady Michelle 0bama was the main speaker at the democrat convention on Tuesday and the reviews seem fairly uniformly positive for her trip down memory lane.

Oh yes, she has now assured us that she and the president are just normal folks - they came from families with little money, owed far too much on their student loans when the graduated: young, foolish, and in debt - or words to that effect.

(I wonder if anyone noticed the similar state of our new people's republic: young, foolish, and in debt - but I digress.)

The topic that really caught my attention and in my craw was the touting of national health care as being about choice for women or some such lunacy.
"Hey, we're women, we're adults, and we can make our own choices about our own health care! That's what my husband has done for us! Go team!"
Good grief - doesn't anyone think anymore? I don't mean just at the democrat convention, either: why hasn't there been a huge chorus of folks explaining that being forced to buy insurance from approved companies who are told exactly what they can offer for sale isn't exactly the same as making choices about our own health care? Am I the only one who can't hold this many contradictory clauses in the air while smiling seraphically as if I really believed at least some of the crockery that's going to break when it finally hits the floor or the fan?

What in the world is wrong with Americans these days? Have schools been so bad so long that no one here can think his way out of a paper bag or a government program?!

I'm getting close to the point where I'll despair for these once-great United States of America.

A Hole In Mars?!

  1. Scientists at NASA have found what they're calling a hole in Mars.
  2. There is a perfectly circular crater with a hole at the bottom leading to underground caves of undetermined size.
  3. This 35 meter hole leading to the 20 meter deep cavern is said to be a good candidate to contain Martian life.
What could have caused this hole in the surface? Could it be the remnant of an ancient weapon?
What kind of life do they anticipate finding down there? Are we being prepared for something they already know?
Why does our government continue to push out tantalizing tidbits like this, rather than coming clean and telling us what's actually out there?
Do they fear the reaction of the populace? Is this why the President has signed so many executive orders giving the government extraordinary powers - in case of emergency?

They Backed Down, But So What?

Good grief folks, you'd almost think the 0bama administration was actually on the side of the American family farm the way they're getting a pass on this "backdown" from outlawing chores for kids!
First off, they thought this was a good idea - they really did - it wasn't like they accidentally made a rule that surprised everyone by applying to kids on farms. These blowhards in DC really think they know how to raise kids on a farm better than the kids' own parents do.
Secondly, the retraction of the rules is done in conjunction with the development of a curriculum to be used in the government schools to train farm kids on how not to get hurt with equipment that won't be in the schools. Anyone care to guess how much of the "teaching" will be of the "your parents can't make you touch these dangerous machines that will likely kill or maim you, and they're evil and don't love you as much as the government does if they try to get you to do anything around the farm," as opposed to actual safety instruction? It seems like a pretty difficult thing to get a teacher to do, doesn't it? How are they going to train kids on how to safely use whatever particular stuff they have on their farm when there aren't any sample machines there at the school? That will be especially hard when you realize that they don't really have much time to spare for this kind of instruction when the time is already committed to learning the latest song in praise of our glorious leader president 0bama, how to put condoms on cucumbers and bananas, and which aggrieved group is most deserving of everyone else's money. I mean, there's not enough time to teach them how to read, add and subtract, that the Founding Fathers were actually a pretty smart bunch of dudes who knew better than to trust a powerful central government with any more power than is absolutely necessary, and that we have rights that were granted by our Creator, not by the feds (not even by the Constitution!).

Good grief, they're just going to go about it in an even sneakier way, so don't go giving them any credit for backing down - they haven't backed down any more than the roaches that scamper under the cabinets in the White House have backed down: they're just waiting until the lights go out again and we're not looking.

Remember - I Told You So!

Imagine an Amerika where the FBI keeps tabs on every citizen's online activities - search, browsing, facebook, whatever. Oh, if you can imagine it, maybe you should be working at the FBI because that's just what those "Justice" Department bureaucrats are dreaming of right now.

Check out this link to see what responsible journalists are saying about this topic before you blow me off as a simple ranting blog troll who makes up stuff to complain about just to be able to have something to post on his blog because that's not who I am, and it's not who I ever want to be.

http://mashable.com/2012/01/26/fbi-social-media-monitoring/
I guess that if we ever got to the place where there was nothing to complain about, I might start making things up so I could keep blogging, but I can't see that happening anytime soon, so you might as well just realize that I'm not just blowing smoke up anybody's short or whatever that expression is.

What possible reason or justification could there be for this kind of thing? Maybe they're just sore at the Supreme Court for saying they need warrants to do their fancy GPS stuff to folks, so they're looking for another way to keep track of everyone and everyone. It's hard to understand how those minds work - at least for a normal guy like me anyway.

It's time to complain to the Justice Department - and to your Representative and Senators. Don't let them just do whatever they want to anyone they don't like. The facebook timeline you protect may be your own.

Let's Wash Out Their Mouths With SOPA!

Oh great, another attempt by our congressional overlords to assert their ownership of the internet.
I guess I need to get used to the idea that just because they don't have any idea what they're talking about they're not going to stop talking about and trying to run and probably ending up ruining whatever is under discussion instead.
The blockheads on capitol hill seem to have decided that it's more important for their media buddies to be able to turn off the internet any time they think someone might be enjoying one of their products than it is for actual people to be able to have access to information and commerce and blogs like this one and so they're just going to stomp on the throat of free expression and freedom of the press and freedom to assemble and any other freedom that might get in the way of some corporate overlord thinking that he owns the world.
What a bunch of bums - who elected them kings of the world anyway?

Unlocking Hidden Genetic Codes

  1. Canadian scientists have unlocked otherwise-unused genetic materials in several ant species.
  2. This manipulation has resulted in the birth of super-soldier ants in species where no such caste naturally occurs.
  3. They speculate that similar hidden types and abilities can be unlocked in other - higher - species, perhaps including humans.
Clearly this is aimed at creating alphas, betas, and gammas with the eventual application of Bokanovsky's process.
When will our governments admit their plans for chain gangs of Neanderthals building highways?
When will the scientists tell us what other species have already been reverted to type?
Why are average citizens regarded with so little regard by their putative betters?
When we find more information we'll report it here, but suffice it to say that with talk of cloning mammoths and/or mastodons in recent news, we're taking this whole story more seriously than we otherwise might, and we suggest that you do the same!

Copping an Attitude

It would appear that Obama, Reid, and Boehner are much less well-thought-of than Jobs and Gates, and held in even more contempt than Bank of America and WaMu.
Not much additional commentary required here, is there? Maybe if instead of just taking all the tax money they can get and throwing it down solar rat-holes and foreign rat-holes and every other kind of rat-hole, they produced something of value we wouldn't think they were such a bunch of useless leeches, but they don't and so we do.

The Straw That Turns The Camel's Stomach?

I'm finding it easier to believe fiction than the current news these days. It looks to me like our fearless leaders in Washington have lost their political minds as they try to appease address all of their various competing constituencies.
This particular example, and maybe I should call it schizophrenia instead of saying they've lost their minds but I don't think it really matters all that much since I'm not a shrink so I'm not really making a diagnosis, just an observation of how it looks to me these days, is that the White House is backpedaling on the idea of giving away 300K work permits to undocumented workers illegal aliens in their back-alley amnesty program of only deporting the illegals who might vote Republican (or whatever their criterion is).

Somehow, someone has suddenly figured out that with over 9% unemployment, the laid-off union guys who would normally vote for the Democrats might be upset to see a bunch of work permits go to Mexicans or Canadians or whoever is sneaking across the border these days so they can undercut the unions' wage levels and keep those guys out of work.
This could have turned out to be the straw that turns the camel's stomach and actually loses the Dems some votes from the dependent class, but since 9% unemployment is a whole bunch more votes than 300K supposedly non-voting non-citizens, even these bozos seem like they figured out they'd be cutting off their votes to spike the punch, or however that old saw goes.

I guess I'm glad they seem to be dropping this idea, but it's pretty scary to think that these guys were dumb enough to think it was a good idea in the first place. Maybe they're the inmates who are running the asylum? Maybe we really are all bozos on this bus.

Facing The Ugly Truth

Just when I think our "elites" can't get any dumber, they delight me with another "Oh, great, I guess it can get worse" moment like this one.
First it was the smarmy Eurocrats telling people what kind of nose jobs they can have without being labeled as mentally ill. Now we have pinhead Texas professor Hamermesh telling us that since ugly people earn less money than the average, we need to make "Ugly" a protected class.

The moron helpfully provides research in his book, "Beauty Pays," (please don't buy it, folks, you'll just encourage him. Think of this as a "don't feed the trolls" kind of area.) to show that ugly people earn less money, marry folks who also make less money, have more trouble getting loans (not that making money - being able to repay - would have anything to do with how hard it is to get a loan, right?), and just find it all around harder to get ahead than the non-Ugly folks in these United States.

I think the best part of this whole idea is that once you get government certified as "Ugly" no one will ever even think of calling you ugly or treating you badly. I wish I could be a card-carrying Ugly-American - that's the kind that always gets to go to Europe and trash our reputation as educated, polite, progressive, reasonable people, right? Maybe that means the government is going to pay for these Ugly-Americans to travel - with my tax dollars, since as far as I can tell, I'm not ugly enough to qualify.

Does Ugly run in families? If my wife and I are Ugly, will my kids automatically qualify? What if they're only half-Ugly? Does this all work like the other protected classes?

Oh, one of the best parts is that we'll finally have an objective standard for who's Ugly and who's not - no more personal taste involved, and maybe Ugly women will suddenly be in demand for marriage since they'll come with automatic extra benefits from the government and in employment since you wouldn't dare lay off the ugly one or the EEOC would come down on you like a ton of bricks and maybe hit you with the Ugly Stick.

Maybe this all makes some sort of bizarre sense if you're a college professor moron, but since I'm not a moron, I happy to say that I probably wouldn't understand.

Not Fast, But Furious!

Fast and Furious? Fast and Loose is more like it!

The BATFE (it must stand for something like Bozos working to confiscate Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives) decided that in order to take guns away from law-abiding regular US citizens, it would help to show that criminals from Mexico could get guns here too.

They set up a system where they let Mexican drug cartels get their hands on tons of guns and ammo with the plan being that when they told us that the Mexican drug lords were threatening us with guns they got here, we'd all say, "Oh please take all our guns away from us so those evil guys South of the border won't be able to get guns ehre and come shoot us," or something like that.

What a bunch of morons! Did they really think the first reaction of Americans (and Texans especially!) would be to disarm in order to be safe from armed thugs? When they're living on the border that the feds refuse to secure, and refuse to let anyone else enforce the laws there either? Are they really that far out of touch with reality? OK, let me retract that last one - they haven't touched reality in years, and we all know that. Still, somehow they figured that their friends in the media would make it look like they were clean, at least at the top, and that we'd all give them yet another pass in their assault on our individual liberty and our responsibility for our own selves - fortunately they were wrong, but it remains to be seen how wrong they've been.

So far they've come up with a few scapegoats to resign and pretend they were like a rogue operation rather than the top-down campaign against the Second Amendment that they are and that only an aggressively ignorant press could conceal from their readers and viewers because only Fox News would cover this and maybe conservative talk radio and after all that kind of stuff only reaches a few people who don't count because they're clearly out of the mainstream since they still think that these United States are better than other countries and they'd rather take care of themselves than to have the UN come in with light blue helmets and take care of them. A couple scapegoats aren't going to cut it when there are memos telling everyone what they're supposed to do and to make sure the guns get to the bad guys and then they lost track of the assault weapons they gave the bad guys in Mexico and some Americans got killed by them - this is going to hit somebody high up the chain sooner or later and the sooner the better before these buffoons at the BATFE manage to dismantle the Second Amendment without anyone really noticing.

All we can hope for is that all these unintended consequences end up backfiring on these clowns who are supposed to know something about law enforcement, firearms, and explosives.
Dopes.

Won't Someone Think Of The Families?!

How often do we hear that the family is the basic unit of society? That all political parties and all politicians are in favor of family values? More times than I can shake a ten foot pole at I can tell you; and usually it makes me suspect that whatever else is in the statements of those politicians is being sugar-coated so we don't notice the rat poison that's really being delivered like a judo chop to the solar plexus of our country.
And I'm right about that.

Imagine my surprise, then, when congress recently came out against families! Of course, they're portraying it as being concerned for children (won't someone think of the children?!) as a smoke screen, but it's awfully easy to see through it.
  • Because there are kids from poor families, we give them free food at school.
  • Kids who get free food at school have the stigma of getting free food at school, while the other kids have to bring or pay for their own.
  • We must erase the stigma of being poor, so no one will worry about being poor any more, so let's just give every kid free food - at least in Detroit, apparently.
  • This makes the job of the schools that much easier, too. After all, it's much easier to feed kids than to educate them, so the teachers' unions should be happy.
  • Now that poverty is no longer stigmatized, we won't have to worry about people looking for jobs to get out of that situation.
  • That means we don't have to create extra jobs, and that the unemployment rate will drop dramatically as hardly anyone will be trying to get a job!
  • It also means that kids won't have to worry about whether they have meals with their families, since their family won't have any food - they'll just eat with their indoctrinators teachers at the training facility school every day.
  • This will make it easier for them, when they're parents, as they won't feel guilty that they aren't providing food for their families, since that's not their responsibility anyway.
Brilliant!
If you're a moron; and I'm not.

The FBI Wants Your Kids' Vitals

First off, what the hell is wrong with that Doe family, anyway? They're always getting lost or killed or arrested - just like the kids on this sample from the FBI.

When I saw that the FBI has finally come up with an app to help parents find their missing children, I thought, "What could go wrong here? The FBI is a trustworthy, helpful, friendly ...." Then I slapped myself.

Sure, there's probably a good reason to keep some basic information on your kids in your phone, just in case, but aren't you worried that the FBI will be collecting all this data and keeping it for future reference?

Oh, don't worry about that - they say they're not collecting anything until you send it to them.
Sure, and Santa doesn't check his list twice either.

What's the dead giveaway? They didn't bother to password protect the app. If you're dumb enough to put sensitive personal data about your kids in a wide-open app on your phone that Steve Jobs tracks daily, as does every hacker in the world, including the ones working for the FBI, then maybe you're dumb enough that you're going to lose your kids at the park and you'll need this app anyway, but I'm guessing that's not going to happen, and it's just another way the FBI is filling their databases with not-really-voluntary data that they can reasonably claim they have some reason to think about collecting in case some of these kids get kidnapped, since that's automatically a federal case.

Radiation and Crop Circles

  1. Professor Richard Taylor of the University of Oregon has released a study of crop circles wherein he admits that the creators of crop-circles are not going to give up their secrets easily.
  2. Taylor admires the technology behind this global phenomenon.
  3. One research team has reproduced damage inflicted on crops by using a handheld magnetron.
  4. This microwave technique could explain the speed, efficiency, and incredible detail of the creation of crop circles, Taylor says.

It should come as no surprise that most media outlets are ignoring the main thrust of this information. We now have evidence that crop circles are being created using radiation - not ropes and boards as has been portrayed in commercials and popular entertainments.  This radiation seems eerily similar to that emitted by the tubes used in microwave ovens - or in masers, the predecessor of the laser!

Why won't Washington release the data on the radiation exposure of crop circle investigators? Are they at risk? Just how much risk?
When will the radiation data from crop circles be reported regularly?
Further, why won't Lima release the data on residual radiation from the Nazca lines?
We'll report back here when more information becomes available.

Parsing the Prez #3

Quotes and translations from president 0bama's address of Sunday evening:

"Now, I’ve said from the beginning that the ultimate solution to our deficit problem must be balanced."
By which he means that the approach must be balanced, not the budget. We mustn't simply spend within our means, we must take more money from citizens to cover our spending.
"Now, is this the deal I would have preferred? No. I believe that we could have made the tough choices required — on entitlement reform and tax reform — right now, rather than through a special congressional committee process."
By which he means that it wasn't purely a credit line increase, or a plan where the credit limit was raised and taxes were raised by the same amount, thus holding the deficit steady.
"Now, this process has been messy; it’s taken far too long. I’ve been concerned about the impact that it has had on business confidence and consumer confidence and the economy as a whole over the last month."
By which he means only this last stretch when actual work was being done. He seems uninterested in the previous months and years during which his party refused to propose a budget when they controlled the House, and then to prevent passage of any proposed budget when they only had the Senate.
"Most of all, I want to thank the American people. It’s been your voices — your letters, your emails, your tweets, your phone calls — that have compelled Washington to act in the final days. And the American people’s voice is a very, very powerful thing."
By which he means that it felt like his votes were going away, and he was desperate both to implicate others and to look presidential while doing it, thus - he hopes - minimizing his further drop in approval polling.

In one way, it's frightening how transparent he is. In another way, it's comforting.

Human DNA Has Been Enriched

  1. Human (and other) DNA is composed of four basic building blocks - the nucleoties adenine, guanine, thymine, and cytosine.
  2. Recent research indicates there are now four additional nucleotides.
  3. Those four additional nucleotides are chemically modified versions of cytosine.
  4. Two of these additional building blocks had been seen before the recent stoppage and restart of the SETI project, while the other two were only found after that incident.
It seems that something has caused a chemical modification of one of the four basic building blocks of human genetic material. The question is what is that cause?
This might be a natural adaptation taking place in preparation for the coming Ice Age, but it's also possible that this could be an induced change.
Why won't our governments and scientists tell us the source of these changes? Are they part of the process, or are they afraid of our reaction to the truth?
We'll report back when more information is available.

News of the World - Update!!!

Have The Mighty Fallen, Or Were They Pushed?

To recap:

  1. News of the World broke into private voicemail accounts.
  2. News of the World used the information they got there to make a load of cash by breaking stories no one else could get.
  3. News International - NotW's parent company - is in big trouble with the British Government in relation to these activities (generally being reported as "hacking" - see our teammate Gyro Gearloose's post on this topic for a quick yet powerful debunking of this notion).
  4. Rupert Murdoch may not be allowed to buy the rest of BSkyB as a result of this brouhaha, much to his chagrin.
What's that? They may not be allowed to buy the rest of BSkyB? It appears that News International has withdrawn its bid; but why?
Clearly it was to avoid the inevitable slap by the British Government, which was poised to say "NO" to the deal based on the immense furor over the badly mis-named hacking controversy by the now-defunct News of the World newspaper.

Why was the British Government - their equivalent of our Federal Government here in the USofA - so interested in this clearly distasteful and now-financially-ruinous behavior? and why are they still not forthcoming regarding the real reasons for their intense interests here?
The reasons are clear, feds of any nationality don't want anyone else poking around in other people's business - that's their job, and they don't like competition, and they just made a big clear expensive example of Murdoch and his brood.

Stay tuned for more!

Radiation and Antibiotics

Since 1954, and especially since 1967:
  1. There has been a marked increase in antibiotic-resistant strains of many types of bacteria.
  2. There has been a significant growth in the number of insect species which are resistant to the various insecticides being used in homes, in agriculture, and in other commercial activities.
  3. There has been a widespread increase in the incidence of childhood asthma and many previously-unknown food allergies.
What is special about those dates is that in 1954, the Raytheon folks started marketing commercial microwave ovens, and in 1967 Amana introduced the home model of the Radar Range.
As scientists will tell you, there is a major difference between ionizing and non-ionizing radiation as far as their abilities to cause "radiation sickness" symptoms.
As our government scientists at the CDC and NIH won't tell you, since we've been irradiating the microbes and insects which accidentally find themselves in our microwaves, the problem of drug- and chemical- resistant pests has grown at nearly exponential rates.
Why won't our governments tell us what's really going on? Stay tuned as we continue to investigate this potentially deadly threat.
