UPDATED! 11 April 2023 - H2O and USB

This post originally appeared on 19 July 2011
  1. Vitamin Water is offering USB ports to charge mobile devices in bus shelters in various US cities.
  2. This is in support of their "ad positioning" as an alternative energy source.
  3. There is supposed to be nothing but electrical power being supplied by these ports.

While the pseudo-altruism of free electricity is somewhat appealing, and perhaps borderline clever as well, it is quite apparent that there is more here than meets the eye. It would be nearly incredible if for every USB session initiated by electron-hungry consumers, there weren't some kind of Trojan, Worm, or Virus being initiated and/or installed.
As we've known for most of recorded history, tanstaafl - There Ain't No Such Thing As A Free Lunch - and there ain't no such thing as a free charge either.

Just who is behind the applications being installed, and to whom will data be delivered? We'll have updates here as soon as more data becomes available.

--- UPDATE ---

It appears that our top-notch federal are finally catching up with us here at this site.

This link will take you to a legacy media site's coverage of this new discovery.

  1. This is not the same threat we identified here a dozen years ago.
  2. This does show that we've been out in front of the pack, identifying threats to your security.
  3. This also raises the question, "Has the FBI finished slurping your data (or injecting malware), and now they want to make sure no one else does it to you?" If not, why this warning?

As always, we'll look for further developments in this story, and updates will be posted here as soon as we have more information.

Speaking Power to Truth

If one is old enough to remember the days of "sticking it to the man" and "questioning authority" or even "speaking truth to power" then one can hardly help but be shocked by the way our "rulers" continue to ignore facts and truth, instead repeating bald assertions as though their simple repetition will render them believable and believed.

For example, a federal judge in the 4th circuit has asserted that words don't mean what they mean if he doesn't like them:

In the 56-page decision, Motz noted, "The ADA excludes from its protection anything falling within the plain meaning of 'gender identity disorders,' as that term was understood 'at the time of its enactment.'" However, the judge then contended: "But nothing in the ADA, then or now, compels the conclusion that gender dysphoria constitutes a 'gender identity disorder' excluded from ADA protection.

In other words, Judge Motz Humpty-Dumpty is asserting that words mean only what he decides they mean, not what English speakers know them to mean.

"I have the power, so shut up about facts and truth." If he weren't so enthralled by gender dysphoria, one might be tempted to compare the judge to He-Man. But I digress.

What a flaming moron, and worse, what an arrogant, overly-empowered sycophant. It's time we get back to speaking truth to power rather than allowing its converse.

We'll likely make this a regular feature here. It's a shame we have so much fodder for reviving this long nearly-abandoned blog.

The Threat of Transparency - RE - RE-UPDATED!!

Perhaps you recall this revised post from some time back?
It appears that the glass frog mentioned below in the originally re-updated post are not the only chordates becoming transparent.
No, it's not politicians - more's the pity - it seems that there are now fish with transparent heads.
Our regular readers will not be surprised to find that the author(s) of the linked article attempt to pass this all off as a natural occurrence. No mention is made of these previous efforts at animal transparency. Further, these fish are using their new-found "clarity" as a competitive advantage. They can now look up through their own skulls to see prey which would not - until now - have worried about discovery from below.
One wonders when still higher life forms will get the "glass treatment" and just what other changes in the food chain or predator-prey relationships are in the offing.
One further wonders how a fully transparent human might manage to dominate those who remain visible. H.G. Wells had some instructive thoughts about this topic, but we oughtn't consider this question settled!
As to what is to come, time may tell, but we certainly will tell!

The Threat of Transparency - RE-UPDATED!!

Perhaps you recall this post from some time back?

The Threat of Transparency

  1. Scientists have added colors to worms through genetic coding.
  2. There may well be plans by governments and law enforcement agencies to use these colors as markers and tracking systems for criminals and other citizens.
  3. Japanese scientists at RIKEN have found a way to make human tissue transparent.

Treating biological tissues with the newly discovered reagent renders it transparent, allowing the underlying structures to be easily examined.
Administering the next generation of this reagent intravenously is expected to render all parts of the treated subject equally transparent.
Work is underway on an antidote to this reagent, and the word is that it's being called a deagent. It seems clear that a transparent man could be a very effective spy, especially when that deagent is available to restore his opacity. The one sticking point seems to be a way of retaining some level of opacity in the retinas, to allow for vision, while still reducing the appearance of floating pink discs.

When more information becomes available, we'll report back here.

Well, they're at it again. Scientists at Cal Tech have created a transparent mouse - complete with transparent organs! (Why that is supplied as extra information is a bit hard to
understand. If they're transparent, then their organs must be as well, no?)

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/science/scientists-create-transparent-mouse-complete-with-seethrough-organs-9641860.html
Now all we need is for Putin to steal this technology and Ukraine won't be the only soon-to-be-former nation in his sights.

Today amphibians, tomorrow higher chordates, next week primates? Science marches on to the drumbeat of despots and lunatics. Can't you see it? Hordes of transparent amphibian soldiers making their way through the marshes and estuaries of the Baltic to retake Estonia et al? No. You can't see it because they're transparent.

When we have more information, we'll report back here again.

They Can't Have It Both Ways!

  1. Scientists tell us that the dinosaurs were wiped out (pun intended?!) by an asteroid strike that created the Caribbean Sea. [viz. the Alvarez Hypothesis]
  2. Scientists used to tell us that the Caribbean Sea is where Spain (and Portugal - all of the Iberian Peninsula, in fact) used to fit before Pangaea split up and continental drift created the Atlantic Ocean. [viz. the Caribbean and Iberia] (This theory had the added benefit of explaining why Mexicans speak Spanish rather than English.)
  3. Despite the supposed asteroid strike, Spain seems to have existed throughout history, rather than having been pummeled out of existence by an interplanetary interloper.
Is this just the result of multiple, competing theories? Is it simply something in the same vein as "are Sasquatch and Yeti related or are they the same creature?" or "was Zeus and alien pretending to be a god, or was he a man pretending to be an alien?" While that is certainly a possible explanation, there is almost certainly something much more sinister at work here.

What purpose could be served by claiming that the Atlantic is expanding while the Pacific is shrinking?
What purpose could be served by claiming that huge rocks from space crash to Earth and kill nearly all life?
Could it be something as obvious as wanting to drive a wedge between the United States and her traditional European allies while causing a cozying up between the States and the Asian Pacific Rim nations?
Or ... could it be something far more troubling, something far more devious?
Is it aimed at driving us to cooperate with the Japanese scientists working to add color genetically to transparent worms even as our own scientists work feverishly to turn human beings transparent?

There isn't enough evidence to come down firmly on just one of these possible explanations, but we will continue to investigate, and will report back as further information becomes available.

Apple's Surprise Announcement

Oh great, even without Jobs being there to insert his reality distortion field into the announcements of the upcoming announcement to be announced on March 9th the interwebs are going at least gaga, if not worse.

Just so you don't have to wait more than a week to find out just what those secretive geniuses at the infinite loop (Fruit Lops, anyone?) are going to say, here are the actual facts as we now know them.

Those amazing innovators aren't going to announce a new watch (that was Pebble, did you miss it, bub?). They aren't going to announce a car or truck (Tesla and Google are already busy trying to dismantle the recently-rescued rusty three don't you know). They aren't even going to announce a new iPhone, iPad, or a new name for Siri.

No, they seem to be channeling Luther Burbank rather than Irving Cupertino (or whatever his name really was). After a decades-long program of grafting and cloning, Apple scientists have actually succeeded in creating miniature (or bonsai) versions of the original Macintosh apple tree - and they claim these miniature trees (shrubs?) actually bear full-size fruit. The first successful tree-let was named LISA - Living In-Situ Apple-producer. I kid you not - these guys are brilliant (just ask them).

Now you can belly up to the genius bar and have a glass of hard apple cider while you wait for the indentured hipster to replace the shattered glass in your iPhone.

Yes, the mighty have fallen, folks. Apple is reduced to producing apples.
Chumps.

Dinosaurs, Birds, and Aussies? - UPDATED

  1. Scientists from Emory University in Georgia (USA) claim to have found bird fossils in Australia.
  2. They claim these fossils are contemporary with others of standard dinosaurs.
  3. They further claim that these fossils are evidence of birds having landed in soft rock or sand which then hardened, retaining the "footprints" of the purported avians.
How reasonable is it to believe that a bunch of guys from Georgia would take a trip to Australia and end up finding fossilized bird footprints at the beach? Australia (and New Zealand, a similar and nearby island nation) are home to flightless birds such as the emu and the kiwi, and these "scientists" want us to believe they've found tracks that are "remarkably similar to those in the sands and muds of the Georgia coast, made daily by the herons, egrets, and shorebirds."

When will these scientists release the results of the soil composition tests?
When will they release full-size castings of the "feet" which supposedly made these tracks?
When will they admit that birds large enough to have left these tracks would have left other evidence as well?

It seems more likely that these are either much more recent tracks of current era birds, or that these are actually the tracks of the beings who taught the Australian Aboriginal peoples to make the strange, Nazca-like figures in the deserts of the island continent. Why no mention of either of these much more likely, Occam-approved possibilities? Perhaps government funding is involved, and dinosaur-age birds are on the green-lighted list, while Aboriginal Alien Encounters are not to be publicized!

We'll continue to investigate and report back when we have even more facts.

UPDATE:
Now we hear that a new species of humpback dolphin has been identified off the coasts of Australia (no word on whether they sport near New Zealand at this point). See here for the detailed report: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/mec.12535/abstract
Can we really be expected to believe that this is purely a coincidence?
Do they really think us that gullible?
Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.

"Learn How It's Done."

“…I think if you mention the name Ted Cruz to other Senators, you just get titanic oceans of eye-rolling, because you’re a freshman, you don’t go in and take over hearings. You, like, hang around and learn how it’s done.”
-  New York Times Columnist David Brooks, 4/21/13
The way this reads might sound reasonable to some; but given the actual context, it's clear that Mr. Brooks is really saying something more like this:
"Voters who are foolish enough to vote for someone who is not an incumbent don't deserve to be represented in the Senate."

As my friend, Lewis Cannon, might well say, "This fellow needs a good thrashing."

Knives don't kill people, people do.

I have to believe that I'm not the only one who heard about the mass stabbing in Texas and thought, "Oh great, now they're going to come for our cutlery."

I'm just waiting for the first story telling how this maniac bought his knife at an unregulated knife show where there was no background check and no waiting period before he could take his knife home, or that he failed to register the knife with his local sheriff, or something insane like that.

I find it totally unconscionable that our rulers elected representatives have yet to propose a new raft of knife regulations. Don't they care? What about the children?

Tales from the Senate

Senior Senator from Michigan, Carl Levin, has announced that he won't be running for re-election when his term is up in two years.
“I love representing the people of Michigan in the U.S. Senate and fighting for the things that I believe are important to them,” he said. “As Barbara and I struggled with the question of whether I should run again, we focused on our belief that our country is at a crossroads that will determine our economic health and security for decades to come. We decided that I can best serve my state and nation by concentrating in the next two years on the challenging issues before us that I am in a position to help address; in other words, by doing my job without the distraction of campaigning for re-election.
Perhaps many of us took that to mean that it's a distraction to campaign for re-election, despite the fact that that appears to be exactly the job to which these folks believe themselves to have been elected.
In fact, the most likely "translation" or parsing of that phrase would be:
"I want to do all the things I've wanted to do, but couldn't get a vote from my constituents because they don't want me to do it."

This fellow will bear watching. He seems to have some obfuscatory skills.

Why Is Anyone Surprised?

I don't know about you - OK, I probably really do know about you, but let's leave that for another post, shall we? - right, I don't know about you, but I'm totally stunned and amazed that other people who should know better are stunned and amazed that Huawei and ZTE might not be good guys just selling knockoff products cheaper than we can make them here in the USA or even in Japan or Mexico or something.

Why is it a surprise to think that the Chinese government is using the companies they control to get access to the computer systems of other countries' companies? Isn't that exactly what all the tracking of hacking has told us? that it's all coming from China or Russia or Iran? Good grief, folks, use your brains once in a while instead of just your credit cards. Remember when we used to say that you get what you pay for? Now you're finding out what that might mean in an interconnected, always-on, internet-dependent society, and it means that the ones who sell you something for less than it's worth are probably making up for that apparent loss somewhere else - not like the old "we lose a little bit on each sale, but we make up for it with volume" kind of scam; this is more like the we'll sell you a magazine for less than it costs us to make because you have to take some advertising in there along with the "articles" and such, only where you didn't know the ads were going to borrow your computer to dig up your personal details for auction on the open black market or steal your company's plans and designs to make it easier to create knockoffs and counterfeits of your products before you can get them out the door and for less money because they're going to do the same thing to the next suckers who become customers.

Get a grip on reality and realize that Chinese companies may be owned by those rich Chinese guys you deal with, but those guys and the companies and their customers are pwned by the Chinese government, and that's the way they play the game, bub!

If you don't want to look like a total chump, you'd better wake up and smell the oolong tea and start buying equipment from reputable manufacturers who don't have a business model of sell stuff to chumps for less than its worth, but steal everything that's not nailed down to turn a profit for your commie masters.

Sheesh!

Digging For Hoffa? Not Likely!

UPDATED!
We're still waiting for confirmation that what was found was not extraterrestrial, but what we do know is that Michigan State University anthropologists found no traces of human DNA or bone fragments in soil samples taken from a driveway in a suburban Detroit backyard.
  1. Police in the Detroit, Michigan area are digging up "remains" under a residential driveway based on the claim that Jimmy Hoffa was buried there in 1975.
  2. Apparently someone just came forward to say he remembered seeing a body being buried there then and a driveway was poured on top of the grave.
  3. Many other sites have been excavated in recent years for just the same purported reason.
How reasonable is it to believe that someone has suddenly remembered something as huge as seeing a body being buried in a residential area -  over 35 years later?
Hoffa's body has been reported in at least as many places as the live Elvis has been sighted.

When will the authorities release the results of the tests done on the soil samples?
Why don't they explicitly rule out the possibility that they didn't merely not find Hoffa, but that they did find something else?
When will they come clean about the possibility that it was actually non-human remains that they have found - and not merely animals, but rather extra-terrestrials?

Our rulers have no faith in the ability of the populace to handle the thought that we are not alone in this universe, and they do everything in their power to keep us in the dark.

We'll continue to monitor this situation, and report back when we have more information.

Eleven Years and a Day

You probably saw my post yesterday, and then you probably saw the news reports of the violence at the various US embassies and consulates across jihadistan.

Rather than ramble on here until I froth at the mouth like a rabid dog - which our State Department would consider a hate crime, since our friends are offended by the sight or thought of dogs - I'm just going to encourage you to go watch that video linked in yesterday's post.

Good grief, the world has gone mad.

NASA, Mars, and Nazca Lines

  1. NASA has released purported images of the tire tracks of the Curiosity Rover on Mars.
  2. These pattern created by these lines would only be visible from space.
  3. NASA is claiming that the lines contain embedded Morse Code, reading JPL.
The images posted by NASA look remarkably like the Nazca lines found in South America, but NASA makes no comment acknowledging this obvious connection. It is difficult to believe that even they have not noted the similarity in the lines, as well as in the names! (NASA : Nazca)

By claiming to have embedded additional information in the lines, NASA raises the question as to whether similar information might be embedded in the Nazca lines - yet they clearly have no intention of investigating that question (or if they do, it would appear that they would intend to keep the results of that investigation to themselves).

When will NASA - a part of the US federal government, and thus purportedly accountable to the people - release this important information to the public?
Why do they insist on keeping this potentially Earth-shaking revelation from the general populace?
When will they release data regarding the levels of radioactivity of the Nazca lines?

We'll report back here as more information becomes available.

Oh, that was choice!

First lady Michelle 0bama was the main speaker at the democrat convention on Tuesday and the reviews seem fairly uniformly positive for her trip down memory lane.

Oh yes, she has now assured us that she and the president are just normal folks - they came from families with little money, owed far too much on their student loans when the graduated: young, foolish, and in debt - or words to that effect.

(I wonder if anyone noticed the similar state of our new people's republic: young, foolish, and in debt - but I digress.)

The topic that really caught my attention and in my craw was the touting of national health care as being about choice for women or some such lunacy.
"Hey, we're women, we're adults, and we can make our own choices about our own health care! That's what my husband has done for us! Go team!"
Good grief - doesn't anyone think anymore? I don't mean just at the democrat convention, either: why hasn't there been a huge chorus of folks explaining that being forced to buy insurance from approved companies who are told exactly what they can offer for sale isn't exactly the same as making choices about our own health care? Am I the only one who can't hold this many contradictory clauses in the air while smiling seraphically as if I really believed at least some of the crockery that's going to break when it finally hits the floor or the fan?

What in the world is wrong with Americans these days? Have schools been so bad so long that no one here can think his way out of a paper bag or a government program?!

I'm getting close to the point where I'll despair for these once-great United States of America.

IPv6 Is Back!!!

You know how I've been warning you about how IPv6 will give governments nearly complete information on what and where you're doing what you're doing and now some of the other industry bigwigs and big thinkers are finally agreeing with me that this is all a bad idea and probably really coming from the same friendly folks who bring you black helicopters and try to regulate the amount of aluminum foil an unlicensed individual can buy without a prescription and all that sort of Big Brother-y kind of stuff; and I don't mean that crappy pseudo-reality TV stuff either, I'm talking full on 1984 George Orwell newspeak and everything.

Check this out, people - http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/08/21/verity_stob_ipv6/ - here's a real-life adventure in the near future that will give you a sniff of what's to come if we don't find our way to actually just get IPv5. Whatever happened to IPv5, anyway? Why doesn't anyone know about that, I wonder - and you should too, Bub, if you know what's good for you anyway, since it's probably our best shot at getting more address space without all the extras that the tinhorn dictators and strong-man wannabes are working so hard to shove down our bandwidth.

Wake up before it's too late, world!

Rabies Resistant Peruvian Mutants?

  • Six Peruvians have survived - without treatment - the bite of rabid vampire bats.
  • They live in remote villages far from civilization along the Amazon, where locals endure frequent, typically deadly, vampire attacks.
  • Medical researchers agree that an untreated rabies infection in a human would be invariably fatal, that "nearly everyone who is found to be experiencing clinical symptoms of rabies dies"
While those in the know realize that vampire bats don't kill by draining the blood of their victims - they're far too small for that - they represent an important vector in the spread of rabies. In fact, the bats manage to lap up as much blood as they do by use of a factor in their saliva known as draculin which prevents the clotting and coagulation of the blood.

Until now, all medical experts were in agreement that rabies if left untreated is uniformly fatal. Were they wrong? Were they misleading us? Or ... has something different arisen in the Peruvian jungle?
Why has the Peruvian government not released DNA analyses of the survivors?
When will the Centers for Disease Control admit that the Peruvian Six carry a rabies-resistant mutation?
Which of the world's military organizations will be first to genetically enhance its soldiers with resistance to rabies - and then to develop similar mutations to protect against anthrax and other bio-weaponry?

We will report back here as we receive more information.

Color Me Bloviated

OK, no big, long, involved, well-reasoned post here this time.  Instead, here's a quick note about my current state of confusion.

So the other day, president 0bama says that nobody does it by himself - we're all where we are because of other people.
Of course, he always says there's no reason for us to worry about the people in his past - it's not like the people we associate with have anything to do with who we are; the implication being that we're all self-made individuals (or "folks" as he loves to call us when he's trying to be folksy).

Does he really think we're so stupid or so skilled that we can believe both of those things at the same time? Sorry, I guess that was a rhetorical question, and who needs rhetorical questions?

We're getting worse than we deserve these days.

El Dorado?

  1. When Cortes was conquistador-ing around Honduras, he was told about a city of gold where Quetzalcoatl was born, and where the citizens ate off plates made of gold.
  2. Although it was called the white city, or Cuidad Blanco, it resembles all the other native stories of cities of gold - El Dorado as it has come down to us.
  3. Archaeologists have - perhaps - found this fabled Cuidad Blanco in the middle of the Honduran jungle using LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging), also known as laser mapping.
  4. No one has actually been on-site as yet; all reports of the mythical city's being found rest on the reports of the laser mapping.
Clearly those in the know don't want us there. Scientists closely involved in this "discovery" are telling the media that this is how archaeology is done now - none of that boots-on-the-ground digging and finding kind of work as we all have seen in the Indiana Jones movies.
That kind of hard work is "old school, we've moved on from Indy. Sorry, Harrison Ford," according to an Egyptologist called Parcak.

The real questions, though, are
  • Why are no scientists being allowed on the ground at Cuidad Blanco?
  • Who has actually visited the site to gather the confirmation of the LiDAR maps?
  • How much of the ancient treasure has been looted by government thugs?
  • What other secrets have been uncovered there? When will they release the evidence of the extraterrestrial contact that we all know took place throughout the New World in pre-Columbian times?
We'll report back here as more information becomes available.
